Neurosurgery and Spine Specialists (NASS) is committed to providing medical services of the highest caliber, with the greatest degree of professionalism and ethics, exceeding the expectations of patients, families and communities served.  We strive to provide patients with convenient access to high-quality care. We believe that providing high-quality care is not only about the medical advice that we dispense, but more importantly about the relationships we have with our patients. We continue to strive to be a leader in innovative medical practices and are one of the few practices in the area to offer online health services to our patients.

History

Neurosurgery and Spine Specialists provides state-of-the-art, comprehensive care for all types of neurologial disorders of the spine, brain, carotid arteries and nerves.  Our offices are located in Sarasota on the Southwest Coast of Florida.  While our neurosurgeons treat residents from the surrounding communities, we also treat many patients from across the United States and abroad.  Thanks to our supportive patients, we have been able to grow our practice, providing services to over 30,000 patients.

The practice was founded in 2003 by Dr. Peter Mayer, Dr. Ryan Glasser, Dr. Robert Knego and Dr. Andrew Fine.  Today our practice's support team has grown to 25 members, proficient in different disciplines - all committed to providing our patients with the very best care and respect.  From scheduling to insurance to treatment - we always put the patient first

Andrew D. Fine, MD

Dr. Andrew Fine specializes in the treatment of brain and spine problems using minimally invasive techniques.  He received his Doctor of Medicine from the University of Florida College of Medicine in Gainesville, where he also completed his Post Doctoral training and residency.  Dr. Fine is licensed in the State of Florida.  His hospital appointments include Sarasota Memorial Hospital, Doctors Hospital of Sarasota, Doctors Same Day Surgery, and Gulf Coast Surgery Center.  Widely published and regarded for his scholarly presentations, Dr. Fine is a member of the Congress of Neurological Surgeons, and the American Association of Neurological Surgeons.  Dr. Fine has been elected to Alpha Omega Alpha National Medical Honor Society and is board certified by the American Board of Neurological Surgeons.  He has served as Chief of Surgery and Neurosurgery at Sarasota Memorial Hospital.  For consecutive years he has been chosen as one of the physicians most highly regarded by his patients through vitals.com, an online patient feedback site that rates doctor performance.  In 2009 Dr. Fine received the Patients Choice On Time Physician Award from the American Registry of Business Excellence.  

 

 

Ryan S. Glasser, MD

Dr. Ryan Glasser's clinical expertise includes minimally invasive spinal surgery, minimally invasive posterior and lateral lumbar fusion, complex spinal reconstruction, brain and spinal tumors and trigeminal neuralgia.  He received his Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine.  Dr. Glasser's Post Doctoral training included his residency in neurosurgery at the University of Florida College of Medicine in Gainesville.  He has served on faculty teaching Kyphoplasty and minimally invasive techniques.  Dr. Glasser is board certified by the American Board of Neurological Surgery and licensed to practice in the State of Florida.  His hospital appointments include Sarasota Memorial Hospital, Doctors Hospital of Sarasota, Doctors Same Day Surgery and Advanced Surgery Center of Sarasota.  Memberships in associations include the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, The American Medical Association, the Joint Section on Disorders of the Spine and Peripheral Nerves, the Congress of Neurological Surgeons, Florida Medical Society, the Sarasota County Medical Society, the Alpha Omega Alpha National Medical Honor Society and the Trigeminal Neuralgia Association.  Dr. Glasser has extensive experience in clinical research studies as well as being widely published.

  

Robert S. Knego, MD

Dr. Robert Knego specializes in complex spinal reconstruction, minimally invasive spinal surgery, brain tumors, radiosurgery and pain surgery.  He received his Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Florida College of Medicine in Gainesville, where he completed his Post Doctoral training.  Dr. Knego is board certified by the American Board of Neurological Surgery and licensed to practice in both Florida and Texas.  He is affiliated with Sarasota Memorial Hospital, Doctors Hospital of Sarasota, Doctors Same Day Surgery and Advanced Surgery Center of Sarasota.  Dr. Knego's clinical research experience includes several ongoing studies.  He serves on the faculty at Kyphon and lectures on the topic of restoring spinal function through minimally invasive therapies.  Dr. Knego is a member of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, the North American Spine Society, the Congress of Neurological Surgeons, the Florida State Medical Society and the Sarasota County Medical Society.

 

Peter L. Mayer, MD

Dr. Peter Mayer's comprehensive expertise includes adult brain and spinal surgery, surgery of carotid and vertebral arteries and peripheral nerve surgery.  After receiving his Doctor of Medicine degree from Dartmouth Medical School in Hanover, New Hampshire, Dr. Mayer's Post Doctoral training included an internship in General Surgery at Harvard Medical School, New England Deaconess Hospital.  He served his residency in Neurosurgery at Yale University School of Medicine and subsequently completed a Fellowship there in Vascular Neurosurgery and Critical Care.  Board certified by the American Board of Neurological Surgery and licensed in the State of Florida, Dr. Mayer's hospital affiliations include Sarasota Memorial Hospital, Doctors Hospital of Sarasota.  He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, and the American Association of Neurological Surgery.  He is a member of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons,  the Congress of Neurological Surgeons, the AANS/CNS Joint Section of Cerebrovascular Surgery, the AANS/CNS Joint Section on Spine and Peripheral Nerve Surgery, the North American Spine Society, and the Sarasota County Medical Society.

 

Kenneth P. Vives, MD

Kenneth P. Vives, MD

Dr. Vives comes to us after a long, and prestigious practice at Yale University School of Medicine.  While at Yale University, Dr Vives had a combined general neurosurgery practice at Yale-New Haven Hospital, New Haven.  He served in Sections of Epilepsy and Spine at Yale-New Haven Hospital for 10 years.  He also served as Director, Section of Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery, Associate Residency Program Director and Director of Neurotrauma during his tenure at Yale University School of Medicine.  Dr. Vives is board certified in Neurological Surgery as well as a Fellow of American College of Surgeons.  He is also a member of the American Society of Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery, American Epilepsy Society, Congress of Neurological Surgeons, American Association of Neurological Surgeons as well as the American College of Surgeons.  Dr. Vives provides services in general neurosurgery including brain and spinal surgery with the addition of stereotactic and functional neurosurgery concentrating on surgery for Parkinson's Disease and Epilepsy.  He is currently the Director of Advanced Neurosurgery, Sarasota Memorial Hospital.  He is affiliated with Sarasota Memorial Hospital as well as Doctors Hospital of Sarasota and Advanced Surgery Center of Sarasota.
